Modified Crazy Dad (Uploaded from: Len Tateyama)
The fly is a modified version of Stalcup's Crazy Dad pattern. I have removed the top wing and added some crystal flash for legs and the tail. The color and amount of flash can be customized according to your tastes. Pictured here is a two tone version where the body dubbing starts with red and blends into a motor oil color. Tail is brown with orange flake sili legs. Ice UV dubbing (Tan) was mixed into the body dubbing to provide a little more flash. As for the crystal flash legs, they were added primarily to protect the bottom dubbing from the sand abrading material as it is stripped back in (as was the result of my first unmodified versions). The top wing on the original Stalcup fly was removed (material was calves tail) as I wanted to highlight the translucence of the dubbing and not cover it up. I have also tied this fly using all red dubbing with red sili-legs for the tail and an all motor oil color dubbing with camel/orange tip sili-legs. All seem to work equally well. Species caught with the fly: perch, yellow fin croaker, halibut, and a leopard shark. So far it has only been fished in the winter but I suspect that during the summer, any fish that can be caught on attracter patterns will also be susceptible to this fly. Recipe for Two Tone version: Hook: Mustad S74S SS Size 6 (a long shank stainless steel hook) Eyes: Black Dazl-Eyes 3/16" (a cone head could be used as well) Thread: Danville Hot Orange 210 Denier Flat Wax Nylon Dubbing: Synthetic Living Fibre (SLF) in Fiery Red Brown and Golden Stone Legs: Black Crystal Flash Tail: Black Crystal Flash 1) Lay down a thread base then tie on eyes. Zap-Gap eye's in place to prevent turning. 2) Wrap on three strands of Black Crystal Flash for tail. Extend flash 1 ½ hook lengths beyond end of hook. 3) Wrap a small dubbing ball at the hook bend. This should be about double the size of the hook eye. This will be used to help flare out the sili-legs. 4) Cut 6 pieces of sili-legs about 1 ½ hook lengths long. Tie three on one side of the hook in front (hook eye side) of the dubbing ball, three on the other. Wrap thread all the up to but not over the dubbing ball. This will cause the legs to flare out. 5) Cut about ½ a dozen strands of Black Crystal Flash 1 ¼ " long. Double over the crystal flash on the thread and wrap so that it posts up on the bottom of the fly. Note: I start my flash infront of the fly, pull over the bottom of the weighted eyes, then secure and post up behind the eye. The flash material covers the thread used to secure the eye and protects it from the abrasive sand. 6) Create a dubbing loop at base of where the tail begins to flare out and load with dubbing. 7) Wrap dubbing forward (rotary vise helps here). When you get to the eyes, cross only the top of the eyes in an x-wrap pattern. Tie off at nose. 8) Cement head with your favorite head cement.
